Hello I have a question for anyone who has an answer. I found a 1999 p silver new jersey quarter with no copper on the sides and it looks silver in color the weight of the coin is 5.8 grams. I saw somewhere that they made a certain number of these in silver but not much info online.

Should weigh 6.25 grams if it is silver. 804,000 silver proofs were minted. What kind of condition?

Not sure if this applies to American coin as well, but I know when checking Canadian coins a magnet comes in handy. The silver ones don't stick, and the non-silver ones do.
Hope this helps, sorry if it doesn't apply.

Duh! AND if it is a P mint mark it is not silver. Silver would be S (San Francisco). The "duh" was directed at myself NOT you....

Clad quarters weigh 5.67g
Silver quarters weigh 6.25g
Sounds like yours was silver plated after it was made, accounting for both appearance and weight. I've heard of them being plated in ag, au + pt, in fact someone called this ayem with a gold plated set of 1999 coins.
Rest in Peace

wmd-

Only works with Canadian coins (and US steel cents), because pure nickel is magnetic.

Thousands and thousands of Statehood Quarters were plated in silver, gold, and platinum and sold to unsuspecting people as limited edition collectibles. A number of those have found their way into circulation since. That's what you have. It is worth 25c.

You already have. At 5.8 grams it is much too light to be a silver quarter so it must be plated. If you insist on trying something else there is the specific gravity test. A plated quarter will give a result around 8.9 A silver quarter will be about 10.2
