I'm pretty new to coin collecting having started in march of this year..but I think I've learned a lot in that short time...but one thing I'm not real sure about are the grading companies...i do know that ngc and I think its pcgs are like the top tier...how do I find out where other companies fall in line..for example I had a american silver eagle 1987 graded ms 70 by a company ANI american numismatic institute and I can not find out how reliable they are. if anyone can assist me I would be grateful

There are a lot of TPG's out there, enough to write a book about them and someone already has. But it's not a rating book. I've never heard of anyone rating TPG's but it sounds like something that would be interesting, *and needed* sort of like Moody's or Standards and Poors.

Be careful with them. Some of these alphabet soup grading companies might not be much more than just Luther and Banjo down in basement. If your not sure what and who your dealing with you might be better off just sticking with the top companies: PCGS, NGC, ANACS ICG.

You might also take a look at the TPG section here. Maybe someone has an opinion about them.

Hello Dano and welcome to the forum, just dont book me please

ANI is just another "alphabet soup" grading company. The slab isn't worth the plastic it is made with. But, since it is an ASE, you can more than likely count on it being a resonably high grade MS65-68.

Companies like ANI will slab just about any uncirculated (or AU slider) as a MS69 or 70 and then they quote PCGS prices to make it sound like you are getting a bargain.

The top tier grading services are PCGS, NGC, ANACS, and some people will include ICG in this group as well. Second tier services that are reasonably accurate grade-wise for non-modern coins are SEGS and PCI. They tend to be on the high grading side for moderns though.

If you did a search of different grading company slabs on ebay, you would find 30+ alphabet names. Most of them are one or two man outfits that grade AND sell their own coins and then hype the price in a very unethical manner- truly not in the spirit of an independent third party grader. Search this site for "SGS" and you will see what I mean- they are one of the worst offenders out there.

Yer so dating yerself with that one.

Anyhoo, Dano, ya gotta watch those Third Party Grading services fer sure. It sounds like you've got a handle on the top two so just keep an eye out as you read around here and you'll probably pick up on who's who and who not to deal with. As far as yer ASE goes even if it doesn't come from a top shelf TPG it's probably a pretty nice one anyway. Got any pics?

Dano,

Here are three threads about ANI:

https://goccf.com/t/8677&SearchTerms=ani,tpg

If you're new to coins and grading, watch out for the abc companies. You (like myself right now too) need to learn how to grade a coin. Then when you see a slabbed coin by one of these overgraders, you can decide what YOU think it is, and offer an appropriate amount. You can always break it out of that slab and send it to PCGS or NGC to have them grade it to confirm (or not confirm) what you think the grade is.

Or, you can post pictures under the coin grading practice part of this forum and learn that way as well. There are some very knowledgeable people here who will be more than happy to help you learn. You can also go to https://www.heritageauctions.com and sign up for free, search their archives and compare pictures of PCGS and NGC graded coins (and see what they sold for) and what they look like so you can see the differences in the other coins you may be looking at to buy.

I started with ASE's myself, but only in PCGS and NGC slabs so far.

Well, I did watch the show in the last couple years of airing as a kid and then in reruns, but you gotta love a show that uses a stolen 1913 Liberty nickel in a storyline
