One side effect of high PM prices is that it's easy to upsell.

A lady wanted an ounce silver bar for a kid's birthday. I pointed out that for $5 more, she could get a proof ASE in a nice box. She took two.

How is the retail store-front coin business these days? Are you retired from another occupation, and you've opened a shop to indulge your numismatic skills? As an outsider, it always seemed to me a tough way to make a living. The dealer I go to occasionally, next town over, it seems like there are mostly people coming in to sell whenever I'm poking around in there. Just curious...

I wish I could purchase some ASE proofs for $5 more than regular silver rounds....ASE proofs are around $80 each here....I need 10 more to complete my set, but I'm not sure I want to drop $800 right now.

Anyone know of cheaper places than $80 for proof ASE's?

Yeah, no kidding! ASEs at my local coin shop are priced at spot plus $5... and he can sell every single one that comes in at that price. Not sure what he would sell an ASE proof for but it darned sure would not be spot + $5!

My dealer told me the same thing but I still took the Engelhard bar

One day I'll own an ASE - someone sell me one!

JackB-

After 27 years, I closed my shop in 2002. I'm semi-retired, doing this to add to SS income.

I can't think of any "pure" coin shops; seems they're always coin-and- shops. That's because most are run as hobbies, not businesses, and the bottom line shows it.

EdB-

I never said $5 over spot, I said $5 more than a generic bar.

FastCoin has some slabbed proofs between $70-75, and some slabbed for $900. Other places I have checked, were $100 with COA - $140

Sorry, Fred. Somehow in the dim recesses of my mind, I equated "generic bar" with spot.

Something tells me that there will be a lot of that in the not too distant future. Silver may have bounced off the $50/oz. barrier but it sure didn't fall very far or take too long in coming mostly back. Once the $50/oz. price is breached and held, silver could very well be off to the races. Think repricing on an hourly basis, if not immediately at the time of sale.
