Does anyone know if the U.S.Mint plans on changing the reverse anytime soon. I ask because I have noticed that the obverse is almost always weakly struck and looks bad, and not in a good way. I know that the reverse plays a part in how the obverse comes out so they could weaken the reverse and that might strengthen up the obverse but then the reverse might end up looking bad. Just wondering. Opinions? Thanks, John1

I doubt it. The apparent weakness is a product of the low relief used on modern coins. The low relief is necessary for high speed and extended die life in the minting process.

Aha! First time I heard someone say that. Thanks, because I too was wondering why the bulk of the coins I found were so poorly struck. Thanks.

An entirely new design? Not any time soon. A modification of the current design? Quite possibly as designs are frequently modified to extend die life and improve striking quality. Current US coin also tend to have very low relief due to the output of the newer Schuler horizontal presses which can strike 850 coins/minute.

Figure about 50 years or the demise of the cent, whichever comes first.

I can't begin to imagine who thought of that thing for the reverse of the Lincoln Cent anyway. In the past 100 years the reverse always had something to do with Lincoln. Now a shield? Possibly someone in the Mint has a CENTS of humor. Hopefully enough complaints will make them change that thing.

Uh...its the Union Shield. Lincoln preserved the Union...it is ugly but it does have everything to do with Lincoln....just like wheat ears?

Quote: Uh...its the Union Shield. Lincoln preserved the Union...it is ugly but it does have everything to do with Lincoln Quoted to make a point. It should be obvious why the Union Shield was selected, it is certainly more representative of Lincoln's presidency than some wheat. The Mint CANNOT change the basic design, they do not have the authority to do that. If you want to complain, drop Timmy Tax Cheater a line- the Treasury Sec has final authority for approving coin designs. Not that complaining about the design will do you any good though...
