Jayman931 - it looks like Machine Doubling (MD) to me too. This is generally characterized by a flat, shelf-like appearance of the doubling, and it is more common. I'm sure there are some great resources out there (and on this forum) that can tell you more about the differences. I'm not an expert either, hopefully an "expert" will respond.

I think because what you were looking as doubling is flat and not raised like the normal letters. Doubling has depth where MD does not. ANYONE PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CORRECT ME. I'm still learning too.

Jayman931, hold on to it though and use it as a reference coin. One way that I look at MD is like this: Say you have an inked stamp and you are going to stamp that image (like your address) on an envelope. You Stamp it once and the image looks doubled because the stamp shifted in the process. Now stamp the image twice on the same spot on another envelope, that is an overlap, a doubled image. Same idea on a DD on a coin. Doubling comes from the same image twice. MD is stamped once but shifted in the the process. I hope this helps. I still have trouble telling the difference sometimes.

Does MD have any additional value? It makes sense to me now. This is with out a doubt a MD and not a DD...thanks for all your help everyone...I still think its cool that I found it cause it was subtle...

As far as I know MD doesn't add any value, though some people do collect extreme MD samples, the one you found is minor.

Thanks for all the info...I'm gonna hold on to it as it is my first MD....probably first of many before my first DD....
