I've been asked, and I should know the answer, did the Canary Islands issue their own banknotes?
And if so, until when?
Thanks,
Bob

I don't see anything listed in the two volumes of WPMC for general circulation. There may be something in the Special Issues Catalog but I don't have one.

Apparently not. There's nothing in Volume 1 Pick, and I can't even find any notgeld listed for the cities on the islands.

Thanks Vic. This started as a conversation about Tenerife. Both of us knew the island 40-50 years ago, and both seemed to remember banknotes with the word Tenerife on them.
Trouble is although we both vaguely recall design and colour details, there's nothing anywhere to back us up.

I would say that under Franco he would not allow parts of the country to have their own official anything. Even FC Barcelona was run by a Madrid man. The Canary Islands now have their own political party that wants independence, so Franco would have been extremely scared of the idea. Perhaps unoffical money was circulating away from the authorities, I do not know.
