Poll Question
I sent off several sets to PCGS and was planning on not paying an extra $18 per coin for first strike designation since these 2010 ATB 5 Oz coins are all "First Strike." I received an email from PCGS saying my order is on hold until I reply if I want to add FS or not for the $18 per coin. I attempted to do some ebay research to determine if people are paying at least $18 extra on coins with the designation vs. those without, however, it seems about 90% of the coins are FS on ebay. I adjusted my approach to look at the few coins without FS to see if they sold for a discount, and am not feeling there is a large enough sample for a good answer. From a marketing perspective, the label on FS has an american flag which may add appeal to some potential buyers even if it does not add any "real" value to the coin.

Should I accept PCGS offer to add FS for $18 extra per coin? Explanations of reasoning or analysis appreciated.

I personnally wouldn't pay a premium for any first strike designation. As you mentioned pretty much all the 5 ozers are first strike but additionally it is my understanding that the term "first strike is an arbitrary term used by TPGs/dealers to entice unsuspecting buyers as the mint readily admits it has no idea which coins came off the press first or last for a particular die.

I got the same Email. I opted to add the FS designation. I think it will pay off in the long run. People are going to want a matched set and like you said 90% on ebay have the designatio.

Keep your mint receipt....better than a designation from a TPG.

I assume you are selling these? If not selling, then there is no reason to add FS. Even if you are selling I wouldn't pay it. First Strike was instituted for coins released in the first 30 days of sales. Since all these are eligible? I can't see the value of adding $90 in grading fees and only "hoping" to get it back on a sale. If a future owner wants to have them reslabbed with FS, let them pay for it, it's always available.

My plan is to make the best set I can to keep out of the several orders I was able to get, then sell off the others when I see a good opportunity.
