I just got my Red Book guide to coins in the mail the other day and as I was reading the nickels section, since those are what I mostly search rolls of, and I noticed that the value of just about any nickel after 1940 or so(excluding errors and '42-'45 silvers) that is MS-63 is 25 cents. So does that mean a $2 dollar roll of nickels(assuming they're fresh from the mint or haven't yet circulated too much) from the bank is actually worth 10 dollars($.25 x 40)?

RedBook is retail price you can expect to pay, not what you can expect to sell for

Even if you use the "GREYSHEET" don't expect to paid "bid" either. Sometimes there is a demand sometimes there's little and this varies by dealer. Certified TPG MS 63 can also influence the price over a raw self certified MS 63.

I just checked completed listings on ebay for you, and 2011 BU rolls are selling for about $3 to $4 +shipping. So there is definitely some premium, and I think some years might fetch more.

I haven't had alot of time to look at the new Red Book since I got it earlier this week but the couple pages I looked at were the exact same as 2011. I hope they didn't just slap a new cover on it.

That $0.25 value you see represent the dealers "nuisance charge". The coin isn't worth that much but the dealer has to have something to recover his expenses.

Ah, again a revelation. Had not heard that before, but it certainly stands to reason. I always thought that RB posts a "Wishful Thinking" price and never looked at some of the prices in that light. Overhead is always overhead.
