I don't know of there being two reverses on the 1964 Washington quarter. There is no extra spot in my album, and I didn't see any online sales for differing types for the 1964. What's you info concerning 2 type of reverses?

Coincidental time on the post! I JUST got done with my new CherryPickers' Guide looking through a bunch Washington quarters trying to ID their reverses. I never knew before this that there were different types. Now it seems a pretty easy task.

Type A was first, had the details sharpened on it to make Type B, which was sharpened further in 1965 to make type C. Circulation clad coins are Cs.

To identify the type, look at the right tip of the E's bottom "arm" and the tail end of the S's bottom curl. In a type A & C these two features are very. very close to touching each other. In type B there is an obvious space between them.

Page 150 says all proofs from 1936-1964, of 1968-1972 are type B. If you have one - use it to see the gap.

So how do you tell an A from a C? Type C has much greater detail all around. I found the easiest way to tell is to look at the eagle's tail feathers. The tail feathers in type A are so faint compared to type C they almost look like ghost images.

I hope this helps.

So, do all years up to 1965 have 2 type reverses? or are there certain years? I know 56 has two, but what about others?

Thanks for the information! I was going through a Washington collection and saw that a 1964D with Type C reverse had a nice value and I just did not want to miss out in case my coin had the type C.

Let me add to the Types of reverses available
on the Washington quarter By posting this shot
of a 1970 P Washington quarter Type "M" reverse.
I am not sure of the forum rules on posting links
to other threads in other forums.
(If someone could let me know I would appreciate it)
the compilation was put together by Coop with some
shots of one of my coins.
If you want to find out more about this variety and
about the Types "A" "B" and "C" reverses before I find
out if I can post the links.
Proofartoncircs that is the handle
of a gentleman named Herb Hicks who I believe knows as much
about this series as anyone collecting.
He is also the one who's research gave us the
1972 Type 2 Eisenhower dollar.

Do a Google or Yahoo search for
"herb hicks Washington quarter type reverse"
and you will come up with a good number of hits
with great information on this series

I hope this helps

Terry

My book says:

Quote:
"Type B reverse ... was intended for use on proof coins from 1936 to 1964, and 1968 to 1972. The Type B reverse also exists on regular circulation-strike issues for Philadelphia from 1956 to 1964. All are considered scarce to very scarce. Mint sets of 1959 and 1960 are known with Type B reverse quarters."
