Or should we buy the best example? I've heard this for years it seems to be true for common dates, but not so true for keys. I've looked through some older coin books at LWC prices and keys and semi-keys in g - VF have gone up at higher return on the dollar than there au - ms counterparts. So now I wonder if there will be a major price corection in the years to come?

Hmm, that's a very good point you have made. I never thought about looking at return by grade. Maybe key dates don't follow the same rules?

I just happen to have a year 2000 retail price list for one half of a comparison (no MS offered):

1909-S VDB VG-$370 XF-$495
1914 VG-$95 XF-395
1922 VG-$340 XF-$1150

GTG, so no time to dig up current right now.

I buy my coins for my own enjoyment. Some coins I buy may be worth more in the future than others but that is not anything that I can control. The one thing that I know for sure, when I look at other peoples collections the first thing I look at are the keys. In the past when I have bought lower grade coins to fill spots, I have gone back and replaced these coins with higher grade coins. I am also upgrading my keys and sending my lower grade keys to my second and third sets. I have a large collection but when it comes down to it 80% of its value is in 2% of its coins, the key dates. I think you should buy the best grade that you can afford.

Supply and demand at work here. More demand for the lower grade semi key and key dates than common high grade.

Have you searched for high grade common Lincolns? Try to put a problem free red set together. I am only talking MS63/4/5, slabbed or not.

Believe it would be easier to put together a slabbed set of 64/65/66/67 red brown or red....but the set would cost a huge amount of money.

Try putting together a set of Lincoln Memorial with problem free, true MS65 or better (no error coins). I don't think it can be done.
