I visited a coin show in my town today. I was able to trade my 2 extra SAE's plus $10 for a 2010, and a 2011 to complete my set. I also sold my 1/2 oz platinum I had purchased from the mint back in 1997 for $940. It was the most expendable item I had and will help me pay my mortgage for June as my employer has replaced me with someone younger and less costly to pay. During the time I was there I saw mostly bullion transactions buying and selling.

Always good to hear when someone completes the set they're shooting for, and gets what they're looking for in a sale (I have one of those platinum $50 mint coins myself, a gift some years ago), but feel bad about your circumstance. Sounds like age discrimination, but depends on your situation, of course. Get right out there and get another job, a better one!

Muddler Unless your employer has a LEGAL reason for replacing you, you may well have an actionable claim against them. You can contact the EEOC in Washington, DC. for more info. Age discrimination IS illegal in this country, so even if this is the REAL reason for your firing, they better have another one handy that the government will accept. If not, they could be in BIG trouble. See the following for more info: http://www.eeoc.gov/laws/types/age.cfm

Now I recall it was you Muddler, that I thought the APMEX deal may help, via selling your extra ASE's and getting the ones you needed to complete set. Glad it worked out for you at show, sounds like you got a good deal with just 10 more spent, and sold that Plat coin. The money made from a coin that nice should help you until you find something else.... And that really stinks what happened to you, seems like it is a trend to common anymore. Like many lame things in this country and world, it just is what it is. I know it is opening a whole new can of worms, but you think that guys like Jimmy Hoffa who started these unions, would have made it there core number one priority to be, to not only protect the working man, but make sure he is not forced out early.... Put in all those years and time, learn your trade and advance through experience, and how are you repaid, thanks for the time, here is your walking papers....

I went to a local coin show a few weeks ago and I was overwhelmed! So much there, and I didn't have anytying specifically that I wanted. But I ended up buying a 1/10 oz 2010 gold eagle for 165$ which I Thought was a good deal.
Another guy a few booths down was trying to sell me the same coin for 185, haha.
But its nice to come out with something. I just dont know enough about a lt of the coins to know what a good deal is haha

On a positive note, at this coin show I brought some coins to show off. My 1875 s/cc Trade dollar was a hit, two dealers verified it's authenticity and offered $900, and $950 for it! My 1838 half was graded by one at ms62 and my 1873 arrows half at 58. There was no way I was going to part with these pieces but it was good to get the feedback about them. Some day I will figure out how to properly photograph them and show you guys.

Quote: Some day I will figure out how to properly photograph them and show you guys. That would be excellent. I would LOVE to see them! As to the coin shows... how do you guys find out about these? I am pretty sure that we have some in my local area but they do not seem to advertise anywhere and my ESP seems to be on the blink lately. Are they pure coin shows or are they part of an antique / collectible show?

I had gone to the library to return some books and stopped to read the local paper. There was a photograph of a old bank note from the area that caught my attention and they mentioned the coin show for that day. I left my e-mail address when I entered for future notification.

Sounds good, Muddler. I will have to see what I can find in some of the Nickel Ads type papers we have around here. I will have to check the local rag for ads more carefully as well. It is so full of horse-puckey these days that I usually only read the business page and the front page. Tried to cancel it twice but my wife keeps reviving the darned thing.

I knew an older bank teller who was replaced by a younger (cheaper) one. She fought it and got her job back (I always wonder why people do that, do you really want to work someplace where they're just looking to fire you?)
I wasn't particularly upset to see her go, she prolly spent half her time checking rolls.

Age discrimination happens all the time but its very hard to prove since its easy to make up some other BS. Wouldn't want to work for people like that either but many have no choice.
