Ok folks...fake? Supposedly a 1872 quarter dollar. Supposedly a 1853 half dollar. I don't see any plating coming off and the fact that they are holed makes me think that the previous owner would have seen that it was some sort of plated junk if it was a plated junk copy. Thoughts? Anyone have more info on their original weight and composition?

They both look genuine. The 1853 is a period 1 which were solid California native placer gold. The 1872 was base metal, gold plated. Not sure on weight or BG #.

I know very little about Cal gold, it is definitely not one of my specialities. What I do know is that you can eliminate most fakes two ways- no denomination and/or a bear on the reverse= reproduction.

I agree, that's about the limit of what I have learned as well.
What caught my eye with this one is that it was worthy of a repair, seems to be of a solid pedegree, and is within my price range at $55.

Yeah, I thought it was a crazy price too...I think melt on it is about $75. Frankly I would rather have a more common gold piece, but the asking price on most is out of my little comfort zone. (+$100 on a 1/20 oz=$2000/oz!)

Has all the correct die characteristics. Looks good to me. I own a few genuine Fractionals, and can spot fakes fairly well. If genuine, and I am pretty sure it is, you stole that coin for $55!

Have you figured out if there is a formula for gold "face values" vs silver "face values" on coins that were issued during the gold standard/silver standard? (ratio was a fixed at 15:1)
Was a $20 gold piece worth the same as 20 x $1 silver dollars in the late 1800's?
If that's the case...shouldn't the ASW of the 20 x Morgan dollars(15.469 ASW) be 15 X the weight of the $20 gold piece (0.96750 AGW)? (yeah, that doesn't quite match up rigt...why?)
