Hopefully, these are better pictures, any info appreciated.
Am I correct in thinking that the half sov dated 1817 was the first year of the sovereign.
If that is the case does this make this half sovereign more valuable than the more common years half sovereign

1817 was the first year of the sovereign & half-sov.
To that extent, some might regard 1817 as a "key date", thus attracting a premium.
I'd like to see better pics, but that seems to be a very attractive example.

Back then, gold coins circulated. Better examples attract a significant premium.
In the 1880s, pre-Victorian coins were withdrawn, for melting and re-issue, so early coins are scarcer in the market than mintage figures might suggest.

I haven't been looking for one for a while, so I'm not up to date with the market. When I got mine, well-circulated examples went for spot + 50%. Higher grades were treble the spot price, but that was when gold was $800 per oz.

There's a few on Ebay-UK at the moment. The buy-it-now's are dreamin'. I'd watch the auctions for a few weeks, and you'll get a clear idea of what the market will pay. Given that 1817 is one small part of the market, I'd keep an eye on all of the KG3 years, which isn't many, as the last year of the series was 1820. That way, it'll be clear if 1817 attracts any significant premium, above the other KG3 years.
