I know that the mint didn't make any ASE proofs in 2009, however the one's on the bay are going for crazy money. Are these true .999 fine ASE's that has been dressed up? Or are these something else less attractive, like plated brass plugs?

If anyone has any first hand experience with these I would love to know your thoughts and feelings regarding these. And also, what is with that crazy price? $100 is more than a bit much for what is essentially a silver round in my opinion.

From what I understand the are made with real .999 silver ASE's that started out in MS and then are minted with a special die that is in Proof condition by a private minter. You can read about it on e-Bay I think.

I think the ones you are talking about are the fantasy pieces struck by Daniel Carr. Mr. Carr is a talented coin designer and engraver, and has designed a couple of State Quarters, so he has the qualifications to design legitimate looking US Mint products. These 2009 ASE 'proofs' really fall in the realm of the 1933 Double Eagle and 1964D Peace dollar fantasy strikes, only worth the PM value they contain and not for the seemingly mad prices they command on the Bay...

That is who I was thinking of but could not remember his name. If you really want a "complete" Proof ASE set then need one of Carrs' coins.

Not in my opinion. It may have been struck using a real ASE, but it's a fantasy piece. The U. S. Mint did not stike it as a proof coin.

this is just a fluke that will probably never last. Yes they are .999 and they are made from the same design but they are not put out by the US Mint. DC just used a loop hole to produce these coins just as he did with the 1964 Peace dollar where he used an original host coin of this denomination and made dies of the same design and repunched the coin with the his dies of the date the mint didn't produce, so they can not be called a copy. I think these will die off because they will not be as liquid and believe me if he can do it anyone else with a mint can also and these will start coming out of the woodwork and they can be made any time and in as many as they want unlike the US mint can only mint them in that one year and in limited quantities, these private mints do not have these restraints
