I have a question to ask before I go to the bank asking for rolls of quarters and dimes. If I ask the bank teller at my local bank for silver dollars or silver half dollars are they more likely to say no then yes? I was thinking about getting some rolls of quarters and dimes, should I start off getting two rolls or five rolls?

if you are looking for silver quarters and dimes I would say it is not worth your time to get 2-5 rolls. Usually if you search an entire box then you may get 1 silver coin. sometimes you get none, but sometimes you get lucky and get a few. basically if you get 2-5 rolls then it is almost 100% chance you won't find silver unless you get really lucky.

If you ask for "silver" quarters, dollars or half dollars, they will most likely look at you funny and ask what you mean. Also keep in mind that some banks won't give out boxes of quarters or dimes, or will only do so if you order them and are a customer. I've found this especially true with half dollars as most banks in my area don't keep them on hand. You will also have better luck dime roll searching then quarter searching as far as silver goes. It seems that most people have given up on quarter searching as the finds are so few and far between.

Don't ask for SILVER half dollars or dollars. Just ask for half dollars and large size dollars. If you just ask for dollars you'll get SBA's, Sac dollars, Native American dollars, or President dollars. None of those have silver in them. If you ask for the large size dollars you still aren't likely to get any, but if they do have them they will be Ikes and if you are very lucky you just might come up with a 40% silver Ike or a even an older Peace or Morgan dollar. (Don't hold your breath though.)

Nickolas, silver searching is a volume business. Two to five rolls of anything won't get you anywhere. If you're just starting out and are limited in your "working capital," just ask for big dollars or half dollars. Never, ever mention the "S" word. Proceed always on the theory, what they don't know won't hurt you.

Sort of like asking at places that sell lottery tickets to only give you the ones with winning numbers. So many people are searching for anything Silver today makes asking for anything Silver is almost funny. Actually at many banks even asking for coins is becoming a problem. Way to many are doing the roll searching and then just returning coins to the banks and the banks well know this. Today I brought in a bag of coins laying around the house to a Bank of America branch. The had to put them in a plastic bag, add all sorts of info on that bag, those will be sent out for counting, the results put into my account. AND yes, inspite of this being a deposit into my account, I will be charged for that service.

I don't have that problem when I go to my bank. I just deposit the change right into the machine and it all goes right into my checking account. No questions asked by the bank. I was lucky to find mecury dime in a ziplock bag filled with copper pennies, quarters, nickels, and dimes sometime in the early 2000s. I'm not really looking to make a profit out of silver, it just something I would like to show off to my friends and family.

Just ask for halves or Ike dollars if they have nay they are usually happy to give them to you. If you start ordering boxes then the questions at least that is been my experience.

All the Johnny come latelies, hacks and slobs have moved in and tarnished what was once a discreet and fun hobby. Demanding and rude. No manners or etiquette. Returning coins to the same branch they bought them at. I hate to say it, but this hobby of CRH is in it's waning days...

To Nickolas086, as others have mentioned, just ask for the denomination you want to search. Nothing more. You want dimes, ask for dimes. You want quarters, ask for quarters. Be careful asking for Eisenhower dollars though. I have had more than one teller start looking through the Presidential dollars looking for an "Eisenhower". Ask for large dollars.

I'm new here and new collecting coins. Wish I had started sooner, but got here as soon as I could Thanks for all the good info here. It has really helped! You gave me the courage to pick up some coins at the bank last week. I took the advice to be just honest on what you're doing. It's a smaller regional bank and they were very helpful and kind. I picked up $200.00 halves and learning a lot about what's good coins and what's not. It's a lot of fun, so thanks for all your suggestions!
