Do any of you have Norfed coins?
Quick summary:
1. Man wants silver backed currency.
2. Makes Silver 1 oz "medallions" and encourages people to use them for barter.
3. Medallions catch on bigger than any other barter currency.
4. Feds get upset and raid/confiscate tons of PM and close him down.
5. He is taken to court and accused of ... counterfeiting!
6. Man could be fined $$$$ and spend time in jail.
6. Man will take it to higher court.

Now the ironic part...
7. B/c of the nature of all this, people on ebay go crazy buying these. When silver was getting close to 50.00 an Oz., these were selling for 50-60.00 on ebay!

They are beautiful coins in real life - stunning. I got this proof 2007 b/c I like the look of the PA state (OK - commonwealth) flag on the reverse. normally they have a torch on the reverse. Any scratches you see are on not on the coin, but on the airtight it is in.

Looks JUST like a counterfeit US coin to me! Its a dead ringer for a .... um.... um... well... all those heavy, everyday 20.00-marked coins, larger than a Morgan or Peace dollar, we always spend... everyday!

edited b/c instead of "tons" I had "tone."

If you do a forum search for "Norfed" and/or "NotHaus" and you'll find more than a few threads about them, from both Liberty Dollar enthusiasts and rejectors.

From my point of view, Von Nothaus is a con artist, who found a whole bunch of people who believed in his scam. But whatever you might think about the issuer, the coins themselves have certainly earned a place in fringe numismatics; they will probably always be worth more than generic bullion rounds.

I agree that I do not think I would exactly go whole hog behind the issuer. But I have to admit I agree with the premise of PM backed money. And the one thing I see dangerous if higher courts do continue to convict him is that it opens the door to them saying they can tell US citizens what they can and cannot use to barter with.

When originally seeing these back in 1998 I wondered who in the world would pay him what he was asking (over spot price) for these. My first impression was how ridiculous an idea that people would accept these as being worth 10.00 b/c silver was not near that.

Now I look back and think I should have ordered at least a dozen of his 1998 pieces - they go for a couple hundred+ on ebay now!
