Columbus was very fortunate to not run into any U-boats on his voyage in 1942...

U-boats don't go very well when they are under sail!
BTW, Columbus probably set sail from Lisbon in 1941.

today is the anniversary of the Battle of the Coral Sea, a turning point in 20th Century history. There were a lot of ships engaged in that battle: are you SURE the Santa Maria wasn't there ?

I would have thought Spain had better technology then a small caravel by 1942. I guess they have come a long way in the last 70 years.

I wonder how many kids wouldn't know what is wrong with that.

Typical answers to simple questions I pose to some of the high school grads: Who won the Civil War? Answer, "We did" (meaning the US). Who did we win our independence from in the Revolutionary War? Answer, "the Indians?" What's the 4th of July? Answer, "for barbecues". Real answers believe it or not. I have quite a bit of contact due to family ties with some of these younger graduates and the quality of the education they seem to be getting is mind-boggling. They all know George Washington and Lincoln though.

Quote: They all know George Washington and Lincoln though. But do they know when they lived and what they are famous for? I've known some that thought they were contemporaries of each other.
