I was ready to walk out the door with a little over 10 oz's of silver, but instead I picked up a 1/4 oz of platinum sealed. I have a feeling silver will drop more.

Question to the forum: Are Engelhard Platinum bars hard to come by?

This is my very first piece of platinum I've owned in my life so I thought it was an interesting purchase.

I would appreciate any comments, advice or thoughts on this precious metal.

Happy Friday.
Mark

Nice Mark, I have my eye on a nice liberty 5 oz silver round, plated in platinum, a nice way to add a little of both, and those bad boys fetch about 75 bucks more on average when plated in platinum. Even the small amounts used to plate a large coin that size, is substantial with a nice value....

All I can say about this high dollar metal, is most of the wise here say it and Palladium is gonna keep going up as well, and the three and four year charts show some big gains, esp with Palladium, something you should consider as well. You could have gotten about a half oz of Palladium for the amount for the plat, but hey it is a valuable sought after medal. I can't say those Engelhard bars are ultra rare, they are certainly not growing on trees, or any in my town anyway, lol....

I did a search on ebay by the way, and could not find one example of an Engelhard platinum bar, so perhaps it is pretty rare....

Here is a gram of Platinum in a form I like, as I have this exact 1 gram liberty bar in gold form. Good way to add a gram at a time, and with the high price of platinum, that is a solid amount to me. These end just over a c-note usually....

Platinum is nice. It depends on what you want and what is the best value. Platinum is off it's recent highs and nowhere near it's all-time high. If the price was right then it should be a good purchase for you.

only problem I have with metals like platinum and palladium is when you try to sell it, you get offered way below melt. Also people are more familiar with something like silver and gold but not platinum or palladium.

However, I do like that engelhard plat bar, looks neat.

mkman brought up a good point. Although the melt value of platinum is far more than silver, people want to buy things they are familiar with when purchasing for investments, such as silver. SO if you ever wanted to sell it on CL or something along those lines, you may have a tougher time doing so.
Although I have no experience with this, it comes to mind.

Great point(s). Which is why I wanted this particular metal to come with a certificate. When it does come time to sell, having an assayed certificate, with a reputable company will make it easier to sell. I don't plan on buying a lot of platinum (probably 1 oz total) - Then again, I'll either sell to my local dealer (who know me) or the coin community forum in 25 years. Thanks for the responses so far, I appreciate the input & advice.

Anyone who thinks that silver won't go right back up is really missing out.

The time to buy is on the dips!

Mitch - I totally agree. I will invest a larger amount @ the coin show (200 dealers) on 5/20 regardless of the price. Ironically, this is also the same day I am set to receive a rather large quarterly check from work for my hard work. I'll take that as a sign to invest.

Trust me, I really wanted those 10+ .9999 Canadian Maple Leafs in the display case yesterday.

Something tells me that in 20-25 years, that platinum bar of yours will be worth WAY more than its price today. Those same dollars, however, will not. Nice acquisition!

NOT true for 1 oz or more. Online dealers will offer anywhere from spot to $25 per oz lower than spot on 1 oz or more on any given day of the week.

tripncoins - fwiw, it's best to get these in 1 oz if you can go for it (premiums are less). ALSO make sure you have the assay card / cert number / sealed unit from a reputable dealer. Else walk away. The one you posted above is fine / good.

Thank you - I tried to get these in 1 oz but gosh, it's hard to put down 1800+ when in my mind I'm thinking I could get 1 oz of gold and some silver. (Besides, who doesn't like a PM variety pack?)

Makes you think twice sometimes.

On a side note, I purchased this item from a reputable dealer who is local and gave me a receipt as well for record keeping.

Mkman - email sent.

platinum is just a cool metal.... And there is a lot of industrial uses for it too.

I almost bought a 1/10th oz platinum eagle, but I went with a gold eagle instead. But I agree, I wanna get some platinum in my collection. Most likely some smaller pieces to make sure they are easy to sell, but mainly just for the cool factor.
Rest in Peace

One day I asked my wife to drop off a bar on her lunch hour. She looked at it and said "are you really that hard up? Let me just give you the $30 for the five ounces of silver and you can pay me back later."

"Now look at it!" I said.

"Omigod! OK, no problem"

It's amazing how close a 10 oz bar of platinum looks like 5 oz of silver.

Yikes! It sure does, Fred, and would either be a VERY costly mistake OR a terrific purchase!

When he was a young man, my grand father bought a cigar with a $5 US gold coin. He thought that it was a nickel. I suspect that this was after having had a few beers at the local Speak Easy. I asked him if that was a really good smoke and he just glared at me, so I guess that it wasn't THAT good!
