I recently bought this "silver dollar" and started wondering if it was legal for the Shawnee nation to produce a Medal and then call it a dollar...I saw recently where, the guy who minted the Norfed dollars was in hot water over this same issue

I really like the side with Lewis & Clark. (obverse or reverse?)
That is odd about them using the "dollar".

As with many native tribes, the Shawnee Tribe is a sovereign Indian Nation and the Federal Government recognizes them as "domestic dependent nations". That sovereignty would allow them to create their own currency if they so choose but for practical purposes, US Dollars are their currency of choice. Bernard von Nuthouse had no such sovereignty protection so his product was illegal.

That is a great coin, I love the silver with the history themes, and Lewis and Clark are as big as it gets for American exploration.... Supposedly, I am related to all the Neely's being of Irish origin, via if you check the family tree site, and there is a Neely, who was implicated on a recent history channel episode about Lewis being murdered, and not committing suicide. It was on Brad Meltzer's decoded, and if you have not seen his shows, or read any of his books, you are missing out.... One note, my last name Neely is spelled many different ways, and you will notice it has two L's in the first link below, which I think is a typo, as nobody can seem how to figure out the right spelling for each particular Neely family.... http://www.lewisandclarktravel.com/...ory_channel/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meriwether_LewisI was right about the typo, so the plot thickens.... http://www.tngenweb.org/maps/tntrace.htm

I see no reason why not. They're a sovereign country, using the same logic that allows them to sell tax-reduced cigarettes and have casinos.
Keep in mind, they're making no claim that this can be spent anywhere other than within their country, and lots of countries have dollars. Anyone who wants to spend a few thousand with me is more than welcome.
Mr. Notfed is not a country.

Thats interesting that they can print their own money!...maybe Mr. Nothaus should have declared himself sovereign before he printed his dollars

People also seem to forget...The term "Dollar" is not owned by the United States Government. It was and has been used in other countries as well. Passing it as Legal tender is another matter entirely.
