Imagine you could get some bullion for a nice discount...say $30/ounce (30% discount from spot) but it's in the form of darkside coins...like British, Canadian, Mexican and German etc. ranging from 10%-80% silver.

In your opinion, would it be worth the hassle to mess with them from a BULLION point of view...not a collecting point of view?

I guess that would depend on how much value you put on your time. I assume that such coins would have to be sorted by type so that the silver weight would be easier to figure. I would rather spend my time on other things but another person might find this sorting enjoyable. Once sorted, you would then need to find a buyer, which is not always easily done for foreign coins.

Ed_B, I agree with the buyer issue...and that's the problem, not so much the sorting process. Buyers for the Canadian and Mexican isn't that big of an issue...but the British and German...well...takes all the fun out of getting a good deal. PLUS, like everyone else, who knows where silver will go and I'd realllly hate to end up overpaying for something I can't even move.

Smelters mightn't take them, but I bet if you posted them here, at an appropriate discount off melt, someone would. Buy for melt minus 30%, sell for melt minus 15%...

Not much profit there, but you might make a little something after it's all said & done.

Worth it? I don't know.

Yeah...well said Secret Agent Man. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle, I'm in Mexico and selling is not a simple affair of just dropping something off at the post office.

What is a "darkside" coin anyway? The side of the planet that is dark when it is light over here? Just guessing.

Keep in mind that once you drop below .800, refiners either don't want it at all, or only take it at a substantial discount. It takes six times as much work to refine 40% as 90%.
