So I was looking through my jar of change and I found three nickels with the letter D on the backside. What does that letter mean? Two nickels are dated 1964 and one is dated 1958. Do I have something here or should I throw the nickels back in the container?

Are you talking about the mintmark? For those years, it's located on the lower right of Monticello.

Well ... I assume the "D" letters you refer to are placed on the reverse of the coin on the right hand side of Monticello ... almost exactly at the 3:00 position as you would view the coin reverse side.

Yes?

If so ... these are the mintmark for the Denver Mint where these coins were struck. Jefferson nickels were struck with their mintmark on the reverse through 1964 ...

Both of these coins (1958-D and 1964-D) are commonly found by roll searches today ... and unless in superior condition are worth 5 cents each.

I don't collect coins to make a profit, I do it because it fun to do, and I'm new to coin collecting.

1964-D is a very common coin, I usually find like 30-40 per box. The 1958-D is a little less common and I save the ones I find.

There is nothing extra special about these coins unless the 64 has a double die. The mint marks you should really be worried about are the large ones above the Monticello. Those are silver War Nickels and worth about 2 bucks a piece right now.

Do yourself a favor, Nickolas, buy yourself a RedBook and study it a little before you go much further into this hobby. It's like a horse-racing program, except for coins.
