I found this coin going through a box of odds and ends, I have zippo ideas at this stage. Note that the counterstamp that says 40 hit the coin so hard it deformed it everywhere.

It's approximately 37mm and weighs about 27.2 grams. It's such a dark shade that it doesn't photograph or scan well at all, I did the best I could.

This looks familiar--I think someone will provide a definite ID.
Until then, my bets are on Brazil.

the Brazilians re-valued their coins at some point in the 1800s, and you see a lot of overstruck copper/bronze coins from the 1820s & 1830s. I may have to stand corrected on this, but If I understand correctly, your 40 reis began life as an 80 reis.

About this same era, the Brazilians would overstrike Spanish silver dollars into 960 reis.

A fascinating part of history. There are a few very similar to yours in the 'bay right now.

Hmmm. This thread makes me wonder if we here in the U.S. may eventually see our dollar bills overstamped to "fifty cents" or less?

When I was a kid, gas was 35 cents or so, a gallon. The minimum wage was $1.25 an hour - the equivalent of three gallons of gas plus a burger. Now, the minimum wage is slightly more than two gallons of gas; and, hold that burger!!
