Just wondering if someone could give me a little history on the Trade dollar. I'm guessing they were in circulation before the Morgan dollar? Also I believe that I have seen before that this series is commonly counterfeited? Is this true? I want to add one to my collection and considering I know very little about them I guess I should purchase a graded example from say ANACS so I don't get a fake? Thanks for any words of wisdom...

Trade dollars were mostly made for trade with the Orient and were made from 1873 to 1885. 1879 to 1885 were only made in proof and there are some circulated of these too. There are many fakes out there so it is better to have it in hand or in a trusted graded holder. Three mints have made them, Carson City, San Francisco, and Philadelphia.

Good advice.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy a Trade dollar off of ebay...especially if the seller is from China. ;)

Buy a graded from from ANACS, PCGS or NGC to ensure authenticity.
