So I posted a...post about a week ago about how
I found a 1936 Buffalo nickel in great condition and that it was my favourite find but it has been now bumped down to second place.
And here's why:
Every month I set aside maybe 35 dollars to exchange for rolls of coins(mostly nickels) at the bank and search through them, pick out any coins I need or are old, silver, foreign, etc.
Then the next day or so I'll take the leftovers to the Coinstar, get cash and repeat the process.
So a few days ago I picked up 15 paper machine-rolled rolls of nickels,
took them home opened 2 or 3,
found a cool Cayman Islands nickel and a couple silvers, and on the 4th roll,
I was awestruck when I saw this 1899 Liberty Head nickel!
(the reverse image is a bit smaller)
I couldn't believe it!I never thought I'd find any coin that old through such an ordinary method.
This now holds the title of both my favourite
and my oldest find.
This coin roll searching is yielding much more surprising results
than I would have ever imagined.
Can anyone tell me how coins this old get
into rolls? I could see how they would if they were customer wrapped rolls and some very generous or unsuspecting people putting them in there, but my oldest
finds have been in machine rolls.

Nice work there, it's a good looking coin! Doesn't cashing at coinstar get expensive? I'd just return the money to a different bank, or use it up in daily transactions for a better return.

It's not expensive when I go to a certain Ralph's. They seem to forget to subtract the 9.8% from what I've dumped into the machine.Whenever I'm done dumping the coins the amount of money on the screen telling me how much I've put in,that's how much the cashier gives me.

That is seriously cool.

I found my first Liberty nickel a couple weeks ago, a 1911.

Still waiting on my first 19th Century roll find!

Very simple, machines don't check dates.

When some steals a coin collection and dumps it in a Coinstar, the machine doesn't ask for ID, fingerprints, or any of that other nosy stuff coin dealers seem to want.

It's worth 10% to get easier-to-spend folding money, especially late at night when the coin dealers are closed.

One thing's for certain, that coin hasn't been used in commerce for over a century, it was in a collection for a substantial period.

You are overlooking something - I believe... In San Diego I also use a Coinstar machine. (they subtract 9.2% or 9.8%) depending whether I use Stater Brothers or Vons. BUT the total you see that is due you when your coins have all gone through - allready has the fee (9.8%) subtracted from what originally went through the machine.

Check your receipt closely - you should find the same to be true!

If not - guess I'll have to find a Ralphs in San Diego...

Why don't you put in $1 worth of coins and see what the screen says.

I can confirm that it takes their percentage out as they go....The total at the end of the counting cycle is with the 9% already taken out.

Most likely someone cashed in a collection of old silver for face. It happens all the time.

Even bank tellers tend not to realize those old coins have value.
