I have just listed my Sydney 2000 Olympics Gold Coin collection on ebay (which is in my terms anyway) a sizeable investment. After looking at some of the coin forums I've noticed talk about buyers and sellers being ripped off. One of the problems from a buyers point of view is sending an item like mine and then having the buyer say that the item never arrived. And then reversing the paypal payment and leaving the seller without the item and money. My question is can anyone suggest how best to protect myself from this sort of thing when I ship my coins. I live in Sydney, Australia. Thanks. Rick

Is signiture confirmation an option for the postal system/couriers in Australia? I'd say that's the way to go.

Welcome to CC!
Definately some sort of delivery confirmation and insurance. I don't know what they offer in AU but they must have some sort of option to prove something was delivered. If not, send it UPS, it will cost a lot, but you'll have full tracking.

Ditto what BadThad said. However, if your postal service does offer something similar to the U.S.'s delivery confirmation, it is still flawed.
Half the time the lazy postal workers don't even input the info. I have had stuff delivered and the USPS site claims it has not.
Or, they do input everything, but deliver to the wrong address. Which my delivery person does on a very regular basis. No way to prove it wasn't when a problem occurs. D.C. says delivered.
I'm not even sure signature delivery is 100% fool proof. People can forge signatures. In a high density apartment complex, there is a good chance the carrier isn't going to remember where they got the signature.

How about a UPS or FEDEX-type delivery? Many on-line sellers seem to be going that way, possibly it's more expensive, but may be worth the security...

You can probably sell it on here for a cheaper price (not much after ebay and paypal fees) to a reputable member. at least then you have a little more peace at mind. Also Signature confirmation and insurance would be a must!@

You'll have to wait a while to sell on CCF, some post & time criteria for selling - see member rules for detail

G'day great to see a fellow Aussie Hi rickstar, Wow I am guessing this is your item, very nice. http://cgi.ebay.com/SYDNEY-2000-OLY...em2563a1d9faWell you will have no problem selling anything gold on ebay as there are professional dealers that hound ebay for gold and your guaranteed to get a very good price. They are paying gold trade in price plus a little more for collector's value at the moment. The only thing I could question is postage price. I am using "click and send" at the moment and it's the best for parcels and heavy items. It's a pre-paid satchel with ebay option for Australia. 500g p-p = $5.50 3kg p-p = $9.35 All with tracking option and pay $1 extra and you get signature with collection. It's the best thing going around and I love it and swear by it. "Insurance is also a option that is recommend on any item over $100.00" Quick note: if you ever use express postage, you can't have insurance or registered or tracking, which can be a mistake as it can go "missing" in the mail so don't be fooled. But I wouldn't bother about it now everyone takes into account postage price into total cost anyway. Great pictures, certificate number, and plenty of information you're well on your way to being a professional eBayer, best of luck to you.

Hi Rick, another Aussie here. When posting overseas I always pay an extra couple of dollars for return signature. Its a pink card at PO and attached to parcel. At the other end it has to be signed by the addressee and the card returned to your address in Aussie. proof of delivery anyway. cheers Ducat.

Another quick suggestion... if you elect to use a courier service, IE UPS Fedex or DHL, or even as I'm thinking about it if you use the post, you will need to ensure they accept gold coins, check for any value limitations, and ensure if there is any safety protocols to follow. Assuming they will take it at all, most carriers don't want you to declare "gold coin" with a high insurance value, that's like screaming "steal me" to any package handlers....but neither do you want to put something untrue or misleading on the paperwork, to where when a claim comes in they can deny it.
Do your homework now, not after the fact, and make sure to follow all protocols. It is not a bad idea to write down the time & date of all your calls and the name & extension of who you speak with. Paper trails are king in this sort of thing.
Also speaking of paper trails, make sure you can locate paperwork of where you bought it as well as where you sell it, and don't be surprised if any claim would only pay what you paid as opposed to what you sold it for. So you will need documentation to show both where you purchased it and where you sold it if at all possible.

Oh, and especially if you send it via courier, I would mark it signature required and "strongly encourage" the consignee to open the package immediately in front of the courier.

I've never had any delivery problems. I did have to show the buyer a post office receipt when the items were a little late. Does anyone know if the receipts are enough to get you off the hook for a non delivery? How about delivery confirmation? I know insurance will do it but that take a good bite out of a lesser value item. Has anyone had any experience with the "I never got the item" rip off artists?
