There is a circled spot above the 1984 date. Can someone help me with this? Underneath the Bosch magnifying glass, it seems like it was struck this way.

It could be a lot of things..... a better close-up image would help narrow it down.

It could be post mint damage ( PMD), could be a gas bubble under the copper plating, or it could be an inadvertent "ding" or dent to the die from a tool, or even a mark made to the die by a mischievous mint worker.

Looks interesting though - let's see more.

It could be a split in the plating. Maybe someone took a straight pin and pushed it into the cent. What ever it is, its still worth what it says on the back of the coin.

Okay, here is a better scan of the coin in a better resolution.

The spot seems raised above the regular plating with a spot in the center. I do not think a pin, or such, created this after minting.

As for the value, yes, it is worth at least what is written on it.

I found it in a roll or pennies from the bank. In another one of the roles, I found a corroded dime which was rolled as a penny. So, the way I see it, whatever it is worth I got it for free.

A split in the plating will expose the zinc core to air and when that happens the zinc reacts.

Popped gas bubble. Look at coops 1990-D, the mark between the one and the nine.

Okay, so this is just a small gas bubble which has not fallen or fell off yet.

Interesting.

I have learned something here.

I am saving the penny anyway in a sleeve. Just add it to my personal collection.

I want to thank everyone who helped me on this. I appreciate the feedback.

I have collected on-and-off since I was a teen. That was about 30 years ago and still find coins interesting.

I am hoping to find my first double-die soon but I know it takes both time and some luck. I think my best odds right now will be a 1995 Lincoln Cent.

Once again, thanks.

I plan on being here for some time if all goes well.
