I still think it may be an altered 1917. All of the die characteristics are 1917 and the 6 in the date looks really worked over to me. I do see what some of you are saying, and it could be a complete fake, though I think they would have used a 1917 to make the fake transfer die(or electrotype) and just altered the last digit. Either way, there is absolute no chance this is a genuine 1916.

Looks like a Chinese counterfeit to me. Looks like a raised pimple in the field next to the eagle's wing.

Whatever it is, one thing it is certainly not is a genuine 1916 SLQ.

Johnny - You're definitely right about it being based off of a 1917 - I just believe someone then took a mold of the thing and mass produced it.

There's also a line that makes no sense beside the knee.

I agree with the 6 looking..."funky". You can kind of see where the seven would go, there's a kind of shadow...The 6 looks more prevalent then the rest of the date. imo

I appreciate all the great feedback. You all saved me from getting into a bad situation. Sadly, I think he will just try to to sell it to someone else.

I am no expert but I think it is a fake... something is off with the 6 in the date, I just can't put it into words

i agree with a lot of the previous comments.......that 6 is not the norm for a '16 SLQ......either fake or a modified '17

Eledford: If your friend is still selling this(if that's what is going on here), you should show him this link.

Definitely based off a 1917. In addition to things already mentioned, Liberty's head does not go to the rim like a 1916 should. Color is wrong for the grade, I'd say a fake altogether.

Moe: Additionally, only 7 feedback have been received as a seller. 2 of these are negative and a third mentions a return.

How are people bidding on this thing?!
