I purchase most of my ASE, Austria Philharmonic, and Mexican Libertad on ebay. But with silver taking it on the chin, today $35.08. The premium is approaching $7 - $10 per round. I find that hard to pay. Should I be buying at this price?

i was on the ASE trip too buying them left and right, but with silver dropping the premium I feel is a little steep so I switched to 90% silvers until the premium closes its gap a little bit.....im sure many will disagree with this, but thats what I did because, like you, I felt it hard to pay $45 for an ASE at $35 spot prices

I tend to agree with you guys, the percentage ofpremium is too high. I don't like to pay more than 5-7% premium personally, that is why my acquisition rate has slowed to almost nothing.

Its funny when I was purchasing ASE at twenty dollars, I felt some remorse paying that much. But hind sight being what it is I wished I bought a whole lot more. Hoping to see the return of those days again!

I bought some two days ago and silver fell again today. The Libertads I'm after are very had to find in decent condition so I'd rather pay the premium to secure them for the collection. Spot is going to fluctuate. If it goes so high that its attractive to sell, I might be tempted. There will always be opportunity.
You need to decide how much you want to pay. Make an offer and wait for it. Believe me, one day the price will be exactly what you want to pay. I'm now waiting to see if it breaks through $35.

Like Carmykle said, secure them for the future. Daily drops seems to mean nothing to the value of silver on ebay lately, their is a buying craze currently taking place. I would like to see the numbers of people buying gold and silver this year from last....

Oh, and I love both those coins, must have for collections in my opinion, even though I have neither as of yet. The Libertad is like the poster child for Mexican currency, and the Philharmonics are great, Austrian gold and silver, how can you go wrong....

My buying of silver has dwindle to almost nothing, just like hockingzig. But when a good buy comes along where the item is well below melt. I do tend to unlock the wallet then. I find buys can be had in world coins. Sticking to no less than .835 fineness.

I had brought this same topic up a while ago (page or 2 down below). Based on what I can gather it's best to wait until prices stabilize at whatever price and then buy. From my understanding most dealers do not adjust the premiums down until 2 to 3 weeks after things settle down.

yep, premiums are way to high in my opinion. I've been scouring ebay, craigslist and local shops to load up on some ASE's or bars but the premiums are always too great. For something like generic rounds and bars I don't think they should be that high.

I bought about 76 ounce of eagles and buffalos last week for $36.5 an ounce (not on ebay) There are deals to be found. I'm tired of paying ebay's mark ups

Even though I took business and econonics I am still a little put off by people still wanting to fleece everyone on silver. When it goes up they adjust their prices immediately, however when it drops it takes them forever to correct their prices. To me I think MAYBE 2-3 premium on UNC ASE is fair above spot but I saw a BUNCH going for $10+ over spot. That equates to something like close to a 30% premium. However people will still pay it and thus they will still keep their business model and keep the price high.

I feel sorry for you folks...just about every bank in Mexico wheels and deals in Libertads/Federaly issued Gold. Not that a lot of people do it, but it's avaiable.

Hi Harrison2I don't know about feeling sorry for us, might be the other way around. I used to buy Libertads and the State Series 1oz Mexican coins every time I went to Mexico at the banks but nowdays I don't know if I would even make it back to the airport alive with my silver much less back to the border on bus. (I used to travel by bus occasionally) Guess it depends on the area but I really hope things calm down over there so I can get my 2 oz silver and gold "Bicentenario" series coins. The only ones I've seen pop up on ebay are grossly overpriced.

Why not consider the markup of an ASE as the price of it being backed by the US govt and being legal tender? Does that carry any weight compared to private mint silver bullion? I almost feel as if it's a coin more than a bullion round. -- Boris

Buy low! Unless they are proofs or something you need for a collection there's no reason to pay that much. $5 is pretty good right now. Used to be $2-4.
rastatodd: that's sort of my strategy as well.
