My Name is Carmen and my son just found a rather amazing coin and seems to be very proud of himself. However we are stumped as to what exactly it is. Thanks to your site however I did find out that it is an Ethiopian ten cent piece, However again, I dont know of what year or if its just a re-release. I'm hoping someone can tell me how much it might be worth to start his coin collection and the year of it's minting if possible. I have touched up the pictures to make it brighter and larger in hopes someone can help me out.

Sincerely
Mrs Carmen Houle
Proud mother of a budding coin collector

Hello and welcome.

The date is written below the lion's head, in Ethiopian numerals which are derived from ancient Greek and Egyptian numerals.

In this case, the date-numerals translate to 10+9 x 100 + 90+6, or 1996. However, this is not 1996 AD. Ethiopia uses a different calendar that is seven and a half years "behind" ours - Ethiopian year 1996 began on September 12, 2003 AD.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Many countries do not use our date system. Israel has its own, Arab countries have their own, Japan has its own etc.

If you look at the lion you can see the date, it is not written with arab numbers, but with the numbers they use in Ethiopia in easter Africa. The date is from 2003-2004. The value is probably not that much, as it is only 10 cents from a not so rich country.

Ten Ethiopian Birr is 57 Canadian Cents.

However your coin is 10 Santim, so it is worth about half a Canadian cent if my math is not out.
