I would like to learn more about the Feuchtwanger cent die varieties. I have the Rulau US Tokens 1790 - 1900 book, but the photos of the Feuchtwanger cents are way too small for me. Does anyone know of a reference with larger, clearer photos? Thanks.

I rely on the descriptions in Rulau when determining die pairings. For pictures you might use Heritage Auctions archive as you can zoom in on each coin, they have great search capabilities on their site, and each coin usuallly has the die pairing listed either on the slab on in the description. So you might start there and save some good photos of each die pairing to your computer to create a reference set. Best of luck as some are quite difficult to find.

Thanks cointagous for the reply. I never thought of checking Heritage. The Feuchtwanger cent look like it would be very easy to counterfeit, would you know if there have been any chinese counterfeits floating around on ebay that I would need to be aware of? I haven't read about any on this forum, but I want to be sure so I wouldn't buy one by accident.

I have not seen any Feuchtwanger counterfeits but that threat always exists in numismatics. More likely they would attempt to counterfeit the Three Cent variety because of price but lets not give them any ideas. Many Feuchtwanger examples show moderate wear with VF/XF examples often offered. You also might find better die pairings for the same price as the common on sites like ebay so its an enjoyable hunt.

I have never seen any modern Feuchtwanger counterfeits (Chinese or otherwise.) I have seen some late 19th century electroplates and of course, very recent (2000's) commemoratives. Both are quite easy to spot, however.

Below are two articles that I wrote which were published at another coin site in September 2010. Among other things, the first one explains how to attribute the various 1-cent Feuchtwanger pieces.

TAMS touched on this topic some years ago, but to my knowledge, these articles are the most thorough to date.

Cheetah that is one of the best reference pages I have seen on Feuchtwanger cents. Excellent die study you did.

Thanks CheetahCats. That's exactly what I was looking for. Very helpful! Also, good news about the lack of modern counterfeits. I think I will add one to my collection soon.

5-g looks correct. Here is one I have and they have a similar curl under the right top side of the wing. But I notice yours has a reverse die break that mine lacks. Lets see what Cheetah has to say.

Both are beautiful 5-G specimens!

These are great examples of one specimen being Late Die Stage (LDS), and the other being Early Die Stage (EDS).

I cannot readily see the details on the specimens highest points; i.e., the eagle's feathers.

Without examining it in hand, I'd guestimate the specimen to be somewhere around VF35 - EF45. I cannot comment as to whether it's been [improperly] cleaned or not.
