Looking for some feedback on the impact of light hairlines on the price of older silver.. in particular I am looking at a 1908 Ed. 50 cent piece... coin is in EF45 to AU condition but there are some light hairlines on the reverse... nothing on the obverse. Should it have a big impact on what I should pay for it... should I bother? Its a really pretty coin otherwise and the hairlines are overly distracting as the coin is toned nicely as well.. if it was wiped... it was a long time ago... not a harsh or aggressive cleaning in any way. Your advice would be helpful.

Hi, marjonbc, have you a pic of this coin, which would help?

If, there are light hairlines on the reverse, and nothing on the obverse, likely it has been cleaned, which would depend on giving a value.
1908, is a well sought after .50 cents.

Its not on line ... not sure if the seller will let me take a picture of it... may seem a bit odd. I wondered since there no hairlines on the obverse if maybe it was caused on the reverse by it laying on a felt or velvet backer of some sort in an album or coin case. If the obverse was not so nice I would only consider it at a real deal... but its tempting as they are not that easy to find in near AU.

There's the thing , if the hairlines are distracting, it sets up a discount situation for sure. I don't buy problem coins anymore. Any time I have done it in the past I had buyers remorse down the road and ended up replacing it.

Everyone is different though, so you need to decide if you can live with this coin if you acquire it and if so how much it should be discounted. It's not a real easy date, so you wouldn't discount it as much as more common dates.

Thanks for the good advice... looked at it again and the hairlines are more then I could live with long term as I want it as an upgrade coin... what is the point of buying an upgrade... only to want to replace it later... the hunt continues.
