Wife and I were attending several garage sales on Friday. She spotted a large box full of Red Books - about 25 in all. Of course the price was right, so the box came home with us.

The owner, a lady, shared that her husband passed away a year ago and she will be selling the collection. She promised to let me look and help her out as needed.

Nice find on the books and it is always a pleasure to be able to go through someone else' collection. Good luck.

That's a nice find. What is the date range on the books and what did it cost you? Also, keep us updated on the coin collection from that garage sale. Thanks,
John1

Great find. For some reason, I find it hard to pass on old Red Books so I have been buying them here and there if I can get them for 50 cents or so. Some of the oldest ones are pretty collectible from what I have heard.

I see the older Red Books at flea markets and they sell as fast as they are put out. One of my greatest finds in coins came from a garage/yard sale.

Red Books range fomr 1962 to 2008. Yes, I would like to put a complete collection of Red Books together....believe it might be tough to do. Anybody else?

Depends on how many times you hit the flea markets and/or garage/yard sales. And if you doh't see them at a garage/yard sale, ASK.

Really only the first seven or so issues bring a real premium. The toughest are the first and I believe the fifth editions. And you never know when you'll find one at a good price. About a month ago I picked up a second edition on ebay for $25.

Interesting article but soon as I saw that the first Red Book was published in 1947, I stopped reading this. As usual many people write stories without really knowing what is what. The first Red Book was written and published in 1946 and had the date of 1947 similar to the car industry and others that put the next years date on this years sale items.
Also, as already noted early editions are available on ebay and other web sites. Even Whitman still has thoes replicated 1st editions available.
As to availability, at garage/yard/estate sales, sometimes all you have to do is ASK.
I presently have all editions and could have them several times over if I wanted and mostly by just asking.

The one thing I keep on repeating is you have to ASK. At most garage/yard/estate sales the people putting them on are usually women. And women just don't like putting out coins, coin books, guns, knives, etc. However, if you ASK, some do have those items and may sell them to you pending you don't look like a crook. One of the problems too is they may be alone and would have to leave all their precious items to go get coins or guns, etc. and they normally don't like doing that in front of strangers.
Ask if you could come back later when others are around.
You really have to ASK.

I agree with Just carl. I always go to garage sales and ask. One time when I asked if he had any old coins or currency, he brought a handful of libery nickels out and gave them to me. One that was in there was an 1886 in AG at best. It filled a hole in my collection for sure.
