Hi forumers, I am new to coin collecting. I stumbled upon an old coin that I have right here with me, how do I tell which variation of the silver dollar that I have here. It does look in pretty awesome condition considering its age. Any help would be appreciated, thanks

This is a very obvious fake coin/replica, sorry : (
Check out coins.ha.com for some images of genuine early dollars, and compare.

As Shadow said, go to coins.ha.com then scroll down close to the bottom. On the left hand side, there is a "Virtual Collection" link. Hit that, then select Silver Dollars. Once you compare yours to the image on the site, you'll see the difference.

thanks for all the replies, this is most probably the most helpful forum I have joined :)
well looks like this coin is as good as an iPad rip off
as this coin has been kept for some time, what do you think I should do with it ?
report it to the authorities, or use it as a paperweight ?

If it's made of silver, it would at least have value for the metal. Will a magnet stick to it?

You may start checking the rest of the collection for others.

It's a cast fake and your grandpa probably knew it. I'd have kept it, too. It hardly means his whole collection is bad.

That's the first Liberty I've seen in dreadlocks. For some reason, the forgeries put a scowl on her face. A genuine 1799 dollar for comparison:

That eagle on the reverse looks like a duck, or maybe a platypus...

I believe I see a bit of reeding and if so, that is a sure sign of a fake regardless of design differences. Circulating US silver dollars were not reeded until 1840.
