Hi all,

I'm living in Tokyo, and have acquired a lot of 1-yen pieces in my change. Recently, I've started checking their dates, and am trying to put together a complete run of them; I'm missing Showa 30-33, 35 and 36, and Heisei 11-14, 16 and 20-23. Should I expect to have much trouble in getting these? Are any of them non-existent?

I've tried Google, and it basiclly brought me here.

Thanks in advance,

Percy

According to Krause, all years between Showa 30 and 64 were all struck, except for Year 43, but the uncirculated catalogue values for Showa 30 to 35 are all fairly high, so I assume they're hard to find these days. After Heisei 11 they are still made, but mintages fall away dramatically - they're probably only issued-for-collectors - but in my 2006 edition Krause, year 14 isn't listed at all.

Thank you! I'll have a look at that catalogue as well.

Try the Japan mint site for mintage:

Most coins are worth face value except like what Sap said, if it is in UNC condition, especially the earlier dates, they are starting to be worth more. If you are in Japan, you should access Yahoo Japan auction sites for a rough idea of prices.

Oh, I've got no intention of selling them, I'm just a bit of a completionist :D I'd like to get some kind of near-complete set of modern Japanese currency before I go home in November. These are all circulated, and well-circulated in most cases for the older ones, but they're a pretty little coin and it amuses me no end that they can be floated in glasses of water.

What happened in 43 to stop them minting, or were they just not needed? A quick recount of my lot reveals that I indeed don't have a 43, I've got a 53 with a blob of goop over the 5-kanji.

Thanks for the mint link! I was trying to fnind out which "unusual" coins were still in circulation (Like the 10-yen bit with reeded edges and the 5-yen bit with a less gothic font) and this really helps.
