Notice the doubling at the top and the bottom of the mint mark but not at the middle.

If this was "MD", the middle of the mint mark would be doubled too. right?

I do not see any doubling maybe someone should edit this picture to clearly show where those points of doubling are.

Looks like a die crack through the center of the mint mark? The lower part under the mint mark is Machine Doubling like the bottoms of the date devices.
