I have been eyeing of a silver medallion, and just can't make my mind up if it is worth buying.

The silver amount is 12g .925
And the price is £44.25
Even with collector's value, I am guessing the darn thing will probably never make a return in my lifetime as it seems a bit pricy.

What do you think?

I don't know much about medallions, but I have a few. My strategy, in the light of a lack of knowledge, is I may buy it if:

1. I like it,
2. The bullion value seems OK for the price,
3. I may just happen to know something about the piece I am considering.
4. Overall value for money seem OK.

If I get a 'yes' to at least three, I may consider buying it.

One of the problems with medals, with someone like myself on the periphery of the medals scene, is that I usually cannot justify the purchase of the references, which are essential, if you want to be a serious collector in this field. My medal collection is just too small.

I know many coin dealers will only look at the bullion value and most wont attempt to even buy them unless discounted to spot. Buy it because you enjoy it and little else as bullion value will dictate its price at a later date.

buy it if you like it. Don't worry about the price unless its really expensive. Are you a collector or investor? If you say collector, then buy what you like.

Posing such a question probably implies you don't have many medal books. Such a question also implies you're looking for an eventual ROI.

Medals are a niche field of exonumia. High demand is scant with exception to a small percentage of the medals which exist. "Read the book before you buy the coin" also applies to medals.

If it is a pretty medal, but no collector demand, than that should answer your question.

However, if it was produced by a well known medalist, and/or possesses a theme which is in demand (abolition for example), it might indeed be a good investment.
