I mentioned that I had been lucky enough to find some really nice Morgan silver dollars while on vacation recently. Here is a photo of the newest addition to my small but growing silver hoard: It was a sweet find and I am posting this for the whole gang and especially for my buddy, Silverhawk.

Ed. I don't think you dug those out of the ground...so where'd you find 'em?

They are from a museum in Nevada seems like, hence the nice shape, great find!! Can't go wrong with a hundred plus old Morgan's in their condition, as they would bring a good price right now on ebay....

I have a dumb question, but what is 'Virginia City'?

Virginia City, NV is home to the Comstock Lode, one of the largest silver strikes in US history. It is the main reason why Nevada is known as "The Silver State".

Perfect answer Bob. CC Morgans are made from native silver from the Comstock Load. I am fortunate enough to live close to Virginia City and have been there more than a few times. They have a working stamp mill and still mine gold there. I watched it in action. Incredible! If you have not been there, I highly recommend ;)

I'm about 15 minutes away from Virginia City. It's a cool place. It's worth seeing if you ever get to this part of Nevada (near Carson City). If I remember right, the whole town is considered a historical landmark.

Quote: Ed. I don't think you dug those out of the ground...so where'd you find 'em? You're right, Mitch, I didn't mine my own silver, although that would be pretty darned cool! These came from "The Way It Was" museum. It's on the main street of Virginia City, Nevada. Costs $3 to go in and see all of their exhibits but it is WELL worth the small price of admission if you like old time tools, machines, photos, newspapers, etc. Fascinating place, actually. We spent about an hour in there just looking around. I took some pics in there as well but asked if it was OK to do that before taking any. Most places are OK with visitors taking pics but some aren't and I didn't want to get tossed out.

(making the crossed 4-finger sign to ward off evil!) These might well bring a good price but man... having to part with them at this stage would be pretty bad. I mean... they ARE my 1st Morgans!

Oh yeah I would not sell them of course, it is just good to note that the masses like to buy them. I don't care how nice a piece of silver is, if you or no one else likes it, it has basically no collectors value, and is just a block of silver....
Don't get me wrong, I would love to stumble on one of those door stop pig bar beauty's for a couple hundred at a garage sell like the other lucky member here, but if I could choose, I would take it all in different 1 oz. form, for the variety....

Ed, I was in that shop. I bought a gold nugget back when gold was $500 an oz. ;-) , and a South African natural diamond of all things. Still have both :)

Nice purchases and great additions to your collection. I really like the look of some nuggets. They are pretty cool looking. I once saw one in a jewelry store. It was sort of teardrop shaped, was mounted in a small clasp, and had a gold chain. I almost bought that for my wife but it was $500 and money was a little tight at the time, so I settled for a nice birthday card, a dozen roses, and a dinner out. It would have been pretty cool, though. On the other hand, I probably would have liked it more than she would.
