So the 1921 and 1921-S nickels supposedly had reworked obverse dies, especially in the braid area. I have one of each with full dates in the G/VG range and to me and I think I can finally see what the difference. The creases that separate the braid from the band are much deeper and there are hair creases that sprout right out of the top of the band on this year. There's a obvious difference in comparison to 1920 and 1923.

So my question is, for anyone who knows more about the series than me, is this a dateless 1921? The date is tantalizingly close to the surface so I know vinegar would bring it up quick, but I like the idea of having another tool in my arsenal to ID nickels without resorting to acid.

Not a stupid question, I just don't know enough to give a meaningful answer. I know they used a different font on the date digits for just this one year, but I don't know if they did any other modifications to the obv hub.
