So I went on a trip for a concert around the Baltimore area this past weekend. Two days of 80's hair metal was great, but after it was over I figured I would go to DC since I was already 7 hours from home in Buffalo. I noticed signs in the subway promoting the use of the Presidential dollar coins and thought it was really neat. I also went through a little coin display at one of the smithsonians. I want to say it was the museum of american history or something like that. They had some really cool coins in there, for instance a beautiful 1909 S VDB, and a 1913 (1 of 5) V nickel. I had a blast on the trip and managed to get a coin fix with these 2 things while I was away! Anyone else see signs promoting the use of dollar coins anywhere?

Nice! I have not been to DC since 1983 and I barely remember seeing the coins at the Smithsonian.

Cool! For the longest time, up until renovation in the late 1990s, the American History museum displayed an impressive array of US Gold Coins from the Mint Cabinet, including the rarest double eagles of 1849/1933. Just laying on red velvet, and this display was untouched seemingly for years. They also are the repository for the Hope Diamond, another awesome object. If you wanted to get a real coin fix with US Mint products, there has always been a sales kiosk or desk of the Mint at Union Station. Very similar to the gift shops at Denver and Philadelphia mints.

The collection is incredible. I can spend a whole day in the gold room. Well they used to have a room dedicated to gold. I haven't been there since the big renovation in early 2000. Every time I go there they have to clean the drool of the display cases.

Yeah I saw the hope diamond too, but that wasn't as cool to me as the coins
I didn't see a ton of coins on display. The display I was at was called "Stories on Money"
A hallway with coins in cases on both sides of the walls with little tid bits of information near them.
paper money was in this hall as well
not a huge display, but nice. For the most part I don't think the public cares about all the old coins the US has minted so the display isn't too in depth for the average person but not too weak for someone like me to enjoy
Rest in Peace

Chriscoinmaster , we went in 2009 and I believe we viewed the same display. I believe they just opened it that year. Wow! We were impressed, to bad for us not enough time to look and drool.

Gold room is gone, all of the collection is now off display except for the small exhibit the OP mentioned.

DC is also home to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and it is open for tours.
