Does a plated 1943s take away the value of a decent Cud on the obverse? I'll get a picture up this evening when I get my camera. It's been a long time since my last Cud. So, I'm excited about the find but still I'm wondering if the plated coin will take away from the value. It's still a cool find...nice and shiny. Edited by HoosierDaddy 05/22/2011 07:41 am

The Cud, in itself, will have a negative impact on the market grade of the coin. To the error-market, about all one can really say is, the plating issue will be the less relevant.

Nice Cud, looks like someone buffed on it for a good while.

Looks like it was replated to cover the rust on the coin. Now it is raising it's ugly head again.

I have quite a few decent steelies EF/AU/Unc's. and a few good samples/examples of various degrees of reprocessing (replating) and I do not see anything that would make this coin a repro. cent. Just a circulated normal steelie with a decent Cud that is worn and shows it more because it is higher than the surrounding surface. Unless in hand it is obvious that it is reprocessed. I.E. outside edges showing less than normal wear or appearing to be shinier than the rest of the coin, grainy texture or clogs in the wheat stalks or other devices etc. Either way still a steelie with a Cud. With what ever value to a Cud collector would apply to it. No different than a normal copper Wheat cent with a similar Cud.

The devices are all enlarged from plating adding a false thickness to the devices. Compare with a real uncirculated 1943 cent: The gutter on the Cud cent has the usual plated over debris next to the rim.
