Was wondering if this could make MS-63 ?
I know scans are tough when in comes to detail.
Thanks.

great detail on the coin, but it looks to be possibly cleaned... But then again, it's hard to tell with a scan...
Rest in Peace

Was looking for a grade detail wise. I can only account for this coin as well as others I have going back to only the 1890's. maybe 1900 (only:) Reason being is I know where the coins come from and where they have been over those years.
The cleaning issue comes up a lot on some of my coins. Always a possibility with any coin. Could of been cleaned in 1895 by someone.? I had an issue with a Seated dollar I posted on here. I went over that coin with a fine toothed comb when it was raw and also showed it to a few dealers. They took one look and just blew it off as cleaned. Sent it in to anacs. came back kosher. Seems there must be a lot of dealers that never saw a decent old type coin before. They always assume it was cleaned. Then when you take pics. or scans of the coin it's tough to see the actual detail etc.
Kind of a losing battle. I can send in some coins I guess but then it will be up to the grader working that day to express their opinion. Kind of a coin flip so your odds are 50/50 that you just wasted your money on a slab. I know pcgs gets the bigger bucks but personally I never liked them. I have trusted anacs over the years and thought if anything they were the most conservative of all. Tough thing, coin grading. it's all in the eye of the beholder.
Details can be nailed down pretty good though anyway. Technically I may think I can answer my own original question on this coin. Not a 63 because of the rev. and not having a lot of original luster left overall. Was just curious as I need to get some price figures.

I don't see any wear, so I agree with MS for details. Contact marks are few and small. The images don't give any indication of luster quality which is critical for assigning an MS grade number. If luster is unimpaired by cleaning I think an MS-63 grade is possible. If luster has been stripped (as the scan makes it appear) then you're looking at an "MS Details Cleaned" grade from ANACS or NGC or a "Genuine" label with a "cleaned" code number from PCGS.

Too bad, it has an excellent strike and great detail. Most collectors would be happy to own it.

I like. Stonkin' clash, to boot - nice detail transfer on both faces. 63 isn't out of the question, but these are so scarce in Mint State - it's easier to buy an 1866 in Proof than in Mint State - I wonder how hesitant a TPG would be to extend that grade.

It seems the most common variety (as if R5+ in Mint State can be considered "common"). Check the ear/hair and upper pole for doubling. Is that a die crack in the center of the eagle's right (viewer's left) wing?

A really great looking half, I hope you can get a good grade for it.

Thanks all.
No die crack. Must of been a speck on the scanner bed.
I did not even notice the clash until I looked closer.
The ear does not seem doubled. Only part of the hair that may be would be the right side of the tail. Pole just above the hand looks doubled as well as the banner. Looking even closer
i noticed some very fine and straight hairline scratches in the fields. Possible evidence of a cleaning many years ago.
Hard not to find any older coin that was not cleaned one way or another. Sill looks pretty nice in hand though.
