I have a question about coin weight. I have a Franklin half dollar that is in good shape and is supposed to weigh 12.5 g, however when I weigh it it says 12.2 g. Is my scale off or is this normal?

this is pretty normal, Franklin halves are generally not faked and I wouldn't be worried

Is this normal for most coins?

i.e. the actual weight not being exactly the same as the listed weight?

I'm new to coins, sorry for the dumb question.

The more wear they have the lighter they get, but even straight from the mint there can be some small differences.

My 2 lightest ones were 12.29 grams, so maybe your scale is off some.

well, the weight of the planchets isn't exact for each one, and the wear can take effect on the weight.

so yes, it is pretty normal

EDIT: gothunder beat me to it

Agree with the others, normal. I was pretty surprised too how much coins vary. My first case where I got suspicious were some silver eagles I bought off craigslist. Some had differences in weight of a gram!

1948-1964 90% silver planchets had a +/-2% tolerance, 192.9 grains +/-4.0 grains.

In grams the tolerance range was 12.5 grams +/- .259 grams If your scale is only accurate to one decimal point then we would call it +/- .3 grams. That would mean that a Franklin half could weigh from 12.2 to 12.8 grams and still be within legal tolerance.

it is when they are well out of the tolerances either + or - that you have to start worrying (unless it can be justified by the amount of wear). Just as everyone said even the planchets before being struck or not the exact same weight but as long as they are within those tolerances they are fine
