Im not sure what the cause of this is? The only problem I have is the condition of the coin is just downright terrible. It could be a scratch for all I know. This is a 1990 P.

It might be a die gouge or die dents. Either way it add no premium to your coin.

Im not looking at a value of the coin. I could care less about that. I was just curious on what caused it is all.

I know what you mean. I was the same way. I've figured out what causes most things, but then I realized, if it is nothing, it worth just what it says on the back of the coin. Knowing how the mint process works and recognizing what is/isn't collectable, help me to save less valueless coins. Soon the good stuff started accumlating and not so much trash to keep sorting. It's takes becoming a seasoned collector to realize this. Your just not there yet.

Not keeping this coin just trying to gain more knowledge on the making of the coin.

edited: The only coins I keep are errors (major), doubled dies, and 60 grade or better unless wheats etc.
