I usually don't look twice at clad coins received in change, but this quarter caught my eye when I received it in change from a purchase at a coin shop. Fields are almost flawless, luster and strike are very strong, and the edge reeds are extremely sharp and squared-off. I know they didn't make any 1967 proofs but could this be one of the special mint set (SMS) coins? Is there any way to tell?

This might be the only clad coin I've ever saved from change. How would you all grade it?

I've been looking at SMS coins lately, and that looks just like them.

You mean it came out of their cash register? That's a story in and of itself!

I've heard of coin shops "seeding" change for their customers with low value items such as this. I suspect this was done in your case.

Yes, now that I think of it, I have, too. It's a good customer relations policy all around.

My shop does that too, gives out Ikes, SMS coins, Low value proof coins. He says its offloading inventory when he has too much especially when he bought too much!

I was about to say they probably gave it to you on purpose to either a) get you to come back again b) thanking you for the long term business.

Nice looking quarter. I know nothing about them, so I hope it's worth a little!
