This coin is quite hard to find. 1891-dated half eagles were only made in Carson City (208,000 pieces) and Philadelphia (61,413 pieces). Although they are less expensive, the Philly coins are less common than the CC issues. When I saw this one priced like a common date I jumped on it. What grade would you assign?

Gold is always tough it seem to be more a market grade than a technical grade.

Check out Douglas Winter's inventory or coins we love sections. The coins are all certified by ngc or pcgs but the grades sometimes seem to defy explanation.

When getting a coin like that, I would make sure its slabbed vs raw. Too many chinese fakes around!
