The vending machine thread got me thinking about my other hobby/fun. I alway make a trip to the local coin operated car washes in town at least twice a month. I usually take $100 in $10 denominations. I run $50.00 through each car wash and keep the quarters. I have recovered roughly 70 silver quarters over the past six or seven months doing this. The remainder I just take back to my CU and run through the coin counter.

Weird I know, but it is a source of uptapped silver that I have found.

Wonder why the car wash is such a super spot to pick up silver? Anyone care to venture a guess?

If you can find silver at a car wash change machine, wouldn't it also be fruitful to try say, a laundromat or a video arcade that uses quarters instead of tokens?

35 of the quarters came in one stop. It appears that they dumped more quarters into their machine. Got extremely lucky to say the least. Of course I ALWAYS stop at that one first.

And a side note, 1/2 of them were proofs. I think somebody got into daddys stash for some candy....

I tried that a few times but didn't get anything. It seems our car washes just recycle the same coins forever. Someone buys them out of the machine, puts them in to wash their car and then they go back in the machine for the next person. Like anything I guess if you keep at it it might pay off eventually.

I went to the local car wash and although it is coin operated it was one of those ones where it isn't obvious how to get quarters without getting the actual car wash. I put a quarter in and pushed what I thought might be the return button but it kept the quarter.

Does the car wash have a bill changer? Usually placed in a central location.

It looks like it takes bills as well as coins...I'll get a pic up when I go back but there doesn't appear at first sight to be a way to test it without risking 5-7 bucks on a car wash. All the auto car washes around this area have similar machines installed.
