So once again I live in Buffalo, NY. I am near the border and get a lot of Canadian coinage. Even though exchange is so close to even from american to canadian money, the banks don't like it when I return Canadian mixed into my rolls. Because of this I started collecting modern canadian coins from circulation and have some questions when building my set.
Lets just talk from 1968 (non-silver) to present.
so there is one coin for each date because no dates were skipped like some american coin sets.
-large date 1969 (is this too rare to set my sights on finding)
-1980 wide 0 close 0 (are these hard varieties)
-whats the deal with the "P" or "w" some coins can have
-2003 there are 2 obverses and I have both
-what are the years that have more then one major variety or coin with differing mintmark?
sorry there is a lot here but I need a little clarification. I have a world coin book that gave me ideas but I want to see what stuff I might be missing, forgetting, or searching for that is impossible.
any help is greatly appreciated.

Also I am looking for a trade partner if you have enough posts in the great white north to swap american for canadian coins. Hopefully we can help each other complete some modern sets. Any interest PM me or let me know on here. I check in a bunch.

Hi, Chriscoinmaster, you shouldn't have too much of a problem collecting Canada ten cents from 1968 and up.

If you find a large date 1969, you have just won the lottery

The 1980s you shouldn't have any trouble with either.
the 'P' on the coin means it is 'plated'
The 'W' the coin was minted in Winnipeg

I can help you out with some if you want...

Actually, I am 0-for-hundreds in trying to locate the narrow date 1980! It might be regional.

There is a 2000-P but it's expen$ive!

Otherwise, the only other dates I know of with 2 varieties are 2001 (Volunteer dime and normal dime) and 2006 (P and logo). I'm not counting the dates you already mentioned.

I can also add that the W mintmarks are not part of the circulation series. They would be roughly as hard to find in change as an American proof coin. If you're interested, you can buy them for a couple bucks each.

You also have 2 1968, one from Ottawa and one from Philadelphia, both are nickel.
Ottawa - edge grooves have a V bottom
Phil. - edge grooves have flat bottoms

thanks for the info so far guys I have every date except the 1970, one of the 1980 varieties (I have 2 that look the same, I think they are far date),1991, 2001 regular
ok so a good circulation set would include
-1968 Ottawa and Phil.
-1980 far and narrow
-2001 volunteer and regular designs
-2003 2 obverse designs
-2006 P and logo
then one coin from the rest of the dates
did I leave anything out?
