I considering purchasing my first metal detector. I'm very intrigued by the hobby. I live in a small village that use to be an old Indian town. Lots of history here. The village cemetery is at the end of our property and it is very fascinating to walk through and look at the old stones. Lot of soldiers KIA from the War of 1812, Great American Revolution, Civil War, etc etc. Sorry I got carried away here. Anyway I was looking into the bounty hunter series mainly because of the price. I just want something basic and reliable. Does anyone have any experience with these detectors, or suggestions.

I have used quite a few detectors and I have to say that I like Tesoros the best. My friend had an upper end Bounty Hunter while I was using a Tesoro Compadre (cheapest Tesoso MD), I pulled more out of the ground than he did. I have about 4 Tesoro detectors and I love all of them. They all come with a lifetime warranty while the other big name brands only have a couple of years. The Compadre will run you about $150 and is a turn on and go detector (only has one knob). This is real easy to use. If you think you might get "the bug", I would go the next model up like a Silver umax, Cibola, Vaquero, etc. because you can swap out coils on them. The Compadre has a fixed coil. I have to say that I have not tried the new Garrett 350 yet, might have to try one out to see how it holds up. Good luck in your hunting!

I swing a used Minelab, and have dug over 150 silver coins in less than 3 years. I've owned 5 different detectors the last few years. My advice would be save your money, read the reviews, and then make your purchase, to avoid disappointment.

Mmorgan22, I have done some research and I am definitely leaning towards the Tesoro Compadre. Thanks for the advice. Where did you purchase yours from?

dMAN,
You'll get lots of recommendations on which detector to choose. My comment is directed to your mention of an old cemetery. If and when you do get your detector, please respect the sanctity of the cemetery. The MD code asks all MD'ers to avoid swinging in a cemetery for obvious reasons.
Good luck and happy swinging!

seatednut, rest assured I have no plans of searching the cemetery. I was just rambling on as to the history of the village.

I bought my Tesoro Vaquero from Woodland Detectors. Mike, the owner was great to deal with and gave me a super deal. Try him...

Check craigslist maybe. I got a middle range Bounty Hunter for $50. If I find enough money worth in that, I can move up to one that goes under water :) Start small, make money then move up. I wouldn't' recommend getting a top end that is difficult to use and end up not using it. Waste of money that way. Just my Two Cents :) PS, feel free to PM me, I live in the South Dakota/Iowa/Nebraska area and there are TONS of old heritage around here, I'm just not sure how to find anything lol

Okay so I ended up getting a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV. I had a $90 credit at Dicks Sporting Goods. They will not order a Tesoro because they don't carry there line. I have read good reviews on the Tracker IV and with my $90 dollar credit I only needed to fork out another $41 dollars. Figured it would be dumb not to go this route. Is anyone here familiar with the Tracker IV? Any advice?

That particular model is decent from what I've heard. BH makes some really good stuff and some really crappy stuff.....but I think yours will serve you well.
More than likely, you'll be looking to upgrade in less than a year! :)
