While standing in line recently at the gas station, a cashier was placing the coin trays on a scale and it would calculate how much coinage was in each tray and show that amount on a read out screen. I thought that was a pretty neat way to count the change as opposed to counting each coin separately. It got very interesting when she put the paper money on the scale and it calculated the amount. I asked her about it and she said it gets it right every time but she did not know how it worked.

I never knew there was a weight difference between denominations of paper money. Does anyone know the different weights between a $1, $5, $10 and $20 bill?

are you sure she didn't have to tell the machine the denomination of the bills and it just figured out how many bills it would take to weight that amount and then multiplied that times the number put in to the machine? if that was the case the bills wouldn't have to weight differently as a matter of fact they would have to weight the same (if this is the case)

I have seen them before also..It actually prompts you what denomination to put on the scale (as far as nickels, dimes, quarters).

As for the weight of paper money..according to the BEP website..all notes regardless of denomination weighs about one gram.

Bryan

That would make sense. Next time I see it being done, I'll ask.

i have a machine like this at my work and the person counting the drawers has to physically press a button to tell the machine what denomination it's supposedly counting. and yes, it's always right ^^
