West Point Silver Eagles

Since 2001, all Silver Eagles(except for the 2006 reverse proof) have been minted at West Point. Bullion coins do not carry the mintmark but Proofs and the 2006-08 Uncirculated Eagles do have it. I am not sure what "super eagle" you are referring to, I have never seen anything close to a $10k value. If you are talking about the 1995W with a 30k mintage, that is only a $3000 coin. The Uncirculated Eagles did have a decent premium at one time but the run-up in silver spot has all but erased that premium. IMO, the 2006W Uncirculated Eagle would be the only one with a decent potential for appreciation because about half of the total mintage is locked up in 20th Anniversary Sets- only 200,000 were sold individually.

The 1995W Proof ASE had a mintage of only 30,125 because it was a bonus coin in the 10th Anniversary Gold Eagle set- you had to buy 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz, and 1/10oz Proof Gold Eagles to get that one ounce of silver. The 1995W has actually fallen in value the past few years as have many high value moderns, it was once valued ~$5000.

A couple other Silver Eagles that have a good chance of holding or increasing in value would be the 2006W Reverse Proof(20th Anniversary Set only, many sets broken for the RP) and the 2008W Uncirculated Eagle with the Reverse of 2007. The last one is interesting, the reverse die design was modified in 2008 but a small mintage of Eagles were struck with a 2007 reverse die instead of the new 2008 die.

ok, I gotta say you guys keep me running to my coin box all the time. I spent 10 minutes looking for the differences in the reverse of the 2008 and 2007, but I did find one difference. It's amazing, I'm really starting to enjoy this!!

I thought it was the other way around. I remember buying the 20th anniversary sets and then them releasing one of the coins in the set which if they hadn't of released it individually there would have been two special coins in the set and remember saying "Oh well, they just killed the premium I thought these 20 sets I ordered was going to have" so I am almost positive the 20th anniversary set came out before they sold the burnished ASE individually

The SAE issues fall into 3 general categories, bullion, proof and uncirculated.

There are only 3 on the burnished uncirculated planchet, 06,07, & 08, also known as the W Uncirculated, because they each carry the W mm. The 06 is a little more sought after due to slightly less mintage, but keep all 3. These 3 are all uncirculated versions but were minted at West Point, thus carry the W mm. In 2006 there were 3 planchets used: the normal planchet for bullion SAEs, the uncirculated (burnished) and then the proof.

In 2000 a SAE was minted at West Point, but does not carry the W mm. The only way to get this one was in the 2000 Millennium Set. Only 75,000 sets were minted. It carries a slight premium.

To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the American Silver Eagle program in 2006, the Mint issued a special "Reverse Proof Silver Eagle" coin minted at Philadelphia. This coin was available as part of the 3-coin set which also included the regular proof coin and the new "Burnished Uncirculated" coin.

Are all 2008 W Unc, Burnished. I have a MS-70 2008 W that looks burnished to me. But NGC didn't add it to the title. Do NGC, PCGS, use Burnished on labels. I always see people selling Burnished coins but nothing on the label distinguishes it.

The 2009 ASE Proof is a bear to find.

Thanks Southsav, I wasn't sure if they produced 2008 W Unc, & 2008 W Unc Burnished, So the people selling the 2008W Unc are burnished. Good Deal, I'll have to send NGC an email. I see a ton of sellers selling Burnished yet theirs no mention of it on the label. I think it would be worth the extra $10-15 to have it marked on label. Then again it does say it with the W mm, Sorry dont mean to talk in circles here. I got it now lol.
